Are you after fast results? This blog is for you!

We may be drawn to the allure of rapid weight loss advertising. Sure, if given the choice between fast weight loss and slow weight loss, most would pick the former. But this approach doesn’t come without costs. What happens if those programs really do follow through with their “overnight” promise? Losing weight too quickly, especially through starvation techniques, can result in a number of side effects, some more dangerous than others.

One of the most common and notable long-term side effects of rapid weight loss is actually weight gain. Research has found that after losing weight, about two-thirds gain more than they initially dropped.

More side effects of rapid weight loss are; decreased energy and extreme fatigue, brittle nails and hair, hair loss, and weakened bones. This happens due to the fact that many quick diets cut out on whole food groups, such as carbohydrates, and therefore you would be missing key nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that you need to stay healthy.

Also, your metabolism can get slower. Fast results usually come from extreme calorie deprivation. Our body recognises this as a sign of a limited food supply and goes into starvation mode. When your body goes into starvation mode, your metabolism will slow down to help you conserve energy and your body will hang onto more fat.

Dehydration is another common side effect. Thanks to water weight, it’s common to see slightly faster weight loss in the first two weeks. Some of the signs of dehydration are; constipation, headache, cramping, low energy, dark urine, and irritability.

Losing weight is only part of the journey. Once the weight is off, you must work to maintain the loss. This can be the most challenging part for many. Employing sustainable weight loss strategies consistent with a healthy lifestyle will avoid all of the above and achieve long-term results.

Here are a few tips for a successful approach;

  • Eat enough calories to meet your nutritional needs

  • Consume food from each food group

  • Choose natural over processed foods

  • Develop healthy eating habits

  • Avoid quick fixes/fad diets

If you have tried all these tips and don’t get results, make an appointment with your doctor and a fitness professional as it is possible that something else is going on that may be limiting your ability to lose weight.
